Nokia E71: Still the Best

I recently responded to a post on Howardforums.com asking what I consider to the best Nokia model. I was inspired to declare my loyalty to my E71 once again:

I would HIGHLY recommend the E71 model. Even though low finances play a role, I have been using my E71 for the longest of all my devices so far. It's portability, slim profile, fast qwerty, sufficient speaker and camera make it a goldmine.

After a few months, my E71 has adopted many uses for me: phone, PDA, music player, camera, internet, email, word processor, GPS tracker, 3G bluetooth modem, and alarm clock.

To this day I am impressed with the Nokia Sport Tracker app. I still use it along with my iPod Touch/Nike Sport Kit on my 5 mile runs and sync the E71 with my online Nokia Sport account.

I have absolutely no worries about keeping my E71 and MacBook in sync, for Missing Sync for Symbian does it automatically via bluetooth without fail.

When I go out to public hotspots that happen to fail, I have the advantage of using it as a modem for internet access. The speed is not always wi-fi fast, but is dependable and better than no access at all.

With a 16GB microSD card, this serves as a music player on the go for music transfers from my Mac or podcast episodes from the Nokia Podcasting app.

Honestly, I am so pleased with my E71 setup that I really haven't been impressed by even the N97 or the Palm Pre. My documented affinity for the E90 has been long forgotten, and I have not one regret. I would not be surprised if I end up staying with my E71 for the long haul.

Man, I finally did it. I snagged a Black Steel E71-1 and totally dis assembled it. I swapped everything out of my E71-2 and placed it in the Black housing. The only thing I kept from my Gray steel unit was the keypad and antenna. Main reason was the black keypad had minor differences in characters. The Keypad out of the Gray steel is dark enough it looks sweet! The antenna was also swapped out. Even though they looked identical it had EU marked on it where my old one had US I was pleasantly surprised how easy the E71 was to take apart. The Antenna is just a piece of plastic with the metal part formed into it. It just sits in the bottom housing. It pops in/out with no connectors.
A T5 and T6 is all it takes... Of course it will void any warranty you may have had. I already sold the E71-1 (or Gray steel unit) on Craigslist.

Currently I own a Treo Pro and a Nokia E71.

I find it hard to decide witch one is actual the best. Sure the camera and external speaker of the E71 are better then the ones on the Pro but there are a few things that drive me back to my Pro each time.

1. Notes (syncing and sorting)
On my Pro I use PhatNotes. This allowes me to organize and synchronize my notes between XP and my device.
On the E71 you can create notes but it's a mess when it comes to sorting. Because you simply can't :(

2. Appointment and Task categories.
Impossible to get it to work in a reliable way. I know that SBSH is working slowly on some solution. But in the meantime it seems that there is no solution for this.
Why do I want this? I like to keep my appointments and tasks separate for business and personal use.

3. Turn the reminder of by default on the calendar. It seems only to work on the current day. As soon as you start typing your new appointment on a different day the reminder is set to 15 minutes again.

One small side note: In one of your videos you goto Calendar > Month > Day and start creating a new appointment.
Don't know if you know this but you can just start typing your new appointment in monthly few, it will create the appointment as soon as you start typing :))

3. Reliable backups?
Being a Windows Mobile user for years I know how important it is to create backups every now and then.
There seems to be no way to create a complete backup of the E71 (or any other Symbian device). Only the options that Nokia Suite offers. But this does not include programs, settings etc.

I still have some more questions but this seems enough for today :D

Keep up the good work on your Blog and YouTube vids!
